How We Personalize Hospice Care
February 21, 2025
At Inspire Hospice, one of our top priorities is to personalize hospice care as much as possible to every individual patient and their family. Let’s go over some of the ways in which we tailor hospice care to each patient’s needs and preferences.
- Individual plans. Every patient in hospice brings a unique set of life experiences, each of which have impacted the body and mind in distinct ways. Even two patients with the same diagnosis may present very different symptoms, or experience their pain differently. They may also have different co-occurring conditions, old injuries, or psychological conditions in combination with the condition for which they received a terminal diagnosis. That is why we work hard to create completely customized holistic plans for every patient. These plans account for all the individual factors that are impacting the patient.
- Adapting to dietary needs. Many of our patients have special dietary requirements. These, too, we accommodate effectively through our services, ensuring that the patient’s diet is safe, and that they are getting the nutrition they need.
- Maximizing patient autonomy. Some patients in hospice may still have significant personal autonomy, while others may already have severely compromised autonomy. No matter what condition a patient is in, we work hard to make sure that their wishes are respected, and that they are able to retain as much independence and agency as possible.
- Respecting cultural and spiritual practices. Along with tailoring our hospice services to the stated wishes of every patient, we also take into account their cultural and spiritual traditions, beliefs and practices. We have a multi-cultural staff, and our chaplain is trained to accommodate the patient’s emotional and spiritual needs.
- Working closely with the patient and their loved ones. We have talked about the different ways in which we work to personalize our services and meet the needs of individual patients. But how do we ensure that we are successful? The most important thing we do is take a collaborative approach with the patient as well as their caregivers and loved ones. We take the time to listen carefully to what the patient wants and needs, and to understand all the individual nuances of the situation. Whenever possible, we offer multiple options or approaches, along with the information the patient and their caregiver need to preserve autonomy and maximize quality of life. As this is an ongoing process, we work hard to ensure that the lines of communication are open and our staff are ready to quickly adapt if there are changes in the care that is needed.
