To ensure our patients receive the appropriate care according to their individual needs, our physicians oversee patients’ care plans and ensure all care team members are on the same page.
What is the Role of a Hospice Physician
A hospice physician’s primary goal in hospice care is to ensure that the patient’s symptoms are managed and all their medical and well-being needs are met with an appropriate care plan and working together with the other care team members to carry out the care plan.
Hospice doctors differ from others because they are encouraged to work in a team. At Inspire Hospice, we take a collaborative approach to patient care.
Key Aspects of Physician Oversight
Our physicians are responsible for managing patient care and the care team. Some key duties include:
-
Care Plan Development
At Inspire Hospice, every patient receives personalized care through a customized care plan designed to meet their unique physical and emotional needs. Our physicians collaborate with nurses, certified nursing assistants, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers to develop each patient’s care plan.
Physicians also consider the patient’s wishes and medical preferences when creating a care plan that outlines goals, interventions, and symptom management strategies.
-
Patient Assessment
Hospice physicians regularly review and assess each patient’s symptoms and condition to determine whether the current care plan remains appropriate. During these assessments, they may recertify existing diagnoses, add new diagnoses, or recommend different levels of hospice care.
For example, if a patient’s pain can no longer be effectively managed at home, the physician may recommend continuous care (crisis care) until the patient’s condition stabilizes.
-
Symptom Management
The goal of hospice care is to provide comfort rather than curative treatment. Our physicians manage symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, nausea, and other conditions that affect quality of life.
Working closely with the care team, physicians develop symptom management plans that may include medications as well as non-medicated therapies such as massage, hot and cold therapy, and physical therapy.
-
Medication Management
While nurses administer medications, hospice physicians are responsible for prescribing them. They also review and update medication orders, monitor for potential drug interactions, and ensure medications provide effective symptom control.
-
Communication with the Care Team and Family
Hospice physicians maintain open communication with all members of the care team to ensure coordinated, high-quality care. They also provide guidance, education, and support to patients’ families throughout the hospice journey.
